Paris CDG vs. Amsterdam AMS: Which Hub Should You Fly Through?

A complete comparison of the Air France (CDG) and KLM (AMS) hubs: route networks, connections, lounges, transit experience, and how to choose for your trip.

Paris-CDG or Amsterdam-AMS? It's a question Flying Blue members face regularly, especially when traveling from European cities with connections to both hubs. Here's a complete side-by-side comparison.

Two Complementary Hubs, One Group

Air France-KLM operates from two major hubs: Paris-Charles de Gaulle (CDG) for Air France, and Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) for KLM. Same corporate group — but meaningfully different airports, networks, and experiences.

Route Networks and Destinations

CDG (Air France):

  • 300+ destinations served
  • Dense domestic French network (Paris to Lyon, Bordeaux, Nice, Toulouse and beyond)
  • Strengths: French overseas territories (Martinique, Réunion, Tahiti), South America (São Paulo, Buenos Aires, Bogotá), West Africa
  • The only Air France-KLM hub offering La Première
  • More frequencies to North America on popular routes
AMS (KLM):
  • 145+ destinations
  • Known for Southeast Asian connections (Jakarta, Bali, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur)
  • Sub-Saharan Africa coverage (Nairobi, Lagos, Accra, Dar es Salaam)
  • Some unique destinations not served by AF (e.g. several smaller African capitals)
Verdict on networks: CDG wins on volume and range. AMS wins on certain niche routes in Africa and Southeast Asia.

Connections and Transit Efficiency

Amsterdam Schiphol is consistently ranked among the world's most efficient transfer airports:

  • Single main terminal (with satellite areas) — you rarely need to go far
  • Minimum connection time: 40 minutes
  • Clear signage, logical layout, fast passport control

Paris-CDG is significantly larger and more complex:

  • Multiple terminals, some requiring shuttle buses between them
  • Minimum connection time: 45–60 minutes depending on the terminal pair
  • Terminal 2 alone has multiple satellite buildings (2E, 2F, 2G, 2K)
Verdict on connections: AMS wins, and it's not particularly close. If a tight connection is involved, AMS is a much safer bet.

Lounges and the Transit Experience

CDG: Air France Business lounges are distributed across terminals 2E, 2F, 2G, and 2K. Quality varies by location and time of day. The La Première lounge at Terminal 2E is exceptional — but only accessible to La Première passengers and Ultimate members. No equivalent exists at AMS.

AMS: The KLM Crown Lounge at Terminal D (long-haul departures) is frequently cited as one of Europe's best airport lounges — panoramic tarmac views, quality Dutch food, a proper bar, and a calm atmosphere. The KLM Business Lounge at Terminal C serves Schengen flights.

Verdict on lounges: AMS edges ahead for everyday Gold/Business travelers. CDG has the ceiling (La Première lounge) but more variability in the Business lounges.

Fares and Availability

CDG's larger route map means more competition and, often, better pricing on high-volume routes like Paris–New York. AMS can be more competitive on African or Asian routes where KLM has stronger positioning.

For award ticket availability, there's no structural difference — both hubs access the same Flying Blue inventory system.

Flying Blue Perspective: Does Hub Choice Affect Miles or XP?

Both hubs earn identical XP and miles on equivalent routes and cabines. Choosing CDG vs. AMS doesn't affect your accumulation.

One practical note: if you're based in France, routing through CDG usually means fewer total segments — which can mean fewer XP on short connecting flights, but also less travel time. From Belgium, the Netherlands, or northern Germany, AMS is often geographically closer.

The Summary

| Factor | CDG (Air France) | AMS (KLM) |

|--------|-----------------|-----------|

| Route network | 300+ destinations | 145+ destinations |

| La Première | Yes | No |

| Connection efficiency | Complex, allow more time | Excellent, compact |

| Lounge (everyday traveler) | Good, variable | Excellent KLM Crown Lounge |

| Best for | French domestic feeds, DOM-TOM, South America | Southeast Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, fast connections |

There's no universally "better" hub. CDG offers more destinations and La Première. AMS offers smoother connections and a lounge that many seasoned travelers genuinely prefer. Choose based on your departure city, your destination, and how much connection time you're comfortable with.
