Is Premium Economy Worth the Extra Cost? An Honest Assessment

A candid look at Air France Premium Economy and KLM Economy Comfort: what you actually get, how it compares to Economy, the real price difference, and XP impact.

Premium Economy is often marketed as the sweet spot of long-haul travel — more comfort than Economy, a fraction of the cost of Business. But does it actually justify the premium? Here's an honest breakdown.

What Premium Economy Actually Delivers

Air France Premium Economy (called Economy Comfort on KLM) is a genuine step up from standard Economy in several measurable ways:

Seat pitch (legroom): 97 cm in Premium Economy vs. 79–81 cm in Economy. For anyone over 5'10" or anyone who struggles to sit still for 8+ hours, this is a real and noticeable difference.

Seat width: 49 cm vs. 43–45 cm in Economy — meaningfully wider. The recline angle is deeper, and you get both a footrest and a leg rest, which makes a significant difference on overnight flights.

Meal service: a noticeably upgraded experience — a more generous tray, separate starter, main course, and dessert, and slightly more attentive service overall.

Checked baggage: 2 bags included (vs. 1 or 0 on promotional Economy fares).

What Premium Economy Does Not Deliver

Premium Economy does not include lounge access— unless you hold at least Gold status. So unlike Business Class, you'll still be in the main terminal pre-flight.

The seat does not lie flat. On a 12-hour overnight flight, you will sleep reclined at roughly 124° — better than Economy, but not the same as a flat bed. This distinction matters enormously on very long-haul routes.

Premium Economy also earns fewer XP than Business: 16–24 XP per long-haul segment depending on the distance band, versus 24–36 XP for Business.

Who Premium Economy Is Right For

It makes sense for:

  • Travelers who struggle to sleep in standard Economy on 6–10-hour flights
  • Taller passengers (180 cm+) who find Economy genuinely uncomfortable
  • "Medium" long-haul flights (6–8 hours) where a flat bed isn't essential
  • Anyone who wants meaningfully more space without paying Business Class prices
It makes less sense for:
  • Overnight flights of 10+ hours where flat sleep is a real priority
  • Travelers focused on building XP toward Gold or Platinum status
  • Anyone who can access Business Class through a Promo Rewards award at a competitive miles cost

The Price-Value Equation

Premium Economy typically costs 1.5–2.5x the price of Economy. Business Class often runs 3–6x Economy prices. That middle-ground positioning can be justified depending on circumstances.

Example pricing:

  • Economy Paris–New York: €500
  • Premium Economy: €900
  • Business Class: €3,000

In this scenario, Premium Economy at €900 delivers a significant comfort improvement for €400 more. Business at €3,000 is exceptional — but requires €2,500 more than Economy and €2,100 more than Premium Economy.

If you can book that Business seat for 50,000–70,000 miles via Promo Rewards, however, the calculus changes entirely. Miles-based Business redemptions often beat Premium Economy cash fares on value.

The XP Angle

For status-focused members, the XP difference between Premium Economy and Business is worth knowing:

| Distance Band | Premium Economy XP | Business XP |

|---------------|-------------------|-------------|

| Medium-haul | 10 XP | 15 XP |

| LC1 (2,000–3,500 mi) | 16 XP | 24 XP |

| LC2 (3,500–5,000 mi) | 20 XP | 30 XP |

| LC3 (5,000+ mi) | 24 XP | 36 XP |

If you're trying to reach or maintain Gold or Platinum, Business Class earns XP 50% faster than Premium Economy on the same flight.

The Verdict

Premium Economy earns its price on flights of 6–10 hours for travelers who genuinely struggle to rest in standard Economy. On ultra-long routes of 12+ hours where real sleep matters, consider whether a Business Class miles redemption (especially via Promo Rewards) might deliver better value and dramatically better rest. Premium Economy is a solid upgrade — just not always the most strategic one.
