Flying Blue XP Points

XP (Experience Points) determine your Flying Blue status. They are separate from miles: you cannot buy, transfer, or spend them — they are used solely to reach and maintain Silver, Gold, Platinum or Ultimate status.

Key rule: XP are counted per segment (flight leg). A round trip Amsterdam–New York = 2 segments = 2× the XP shown in the table. XP accumulate over a rolling 12-month year, not a calendar year.

XP vs Miles: what's the difference?

XP (Experience Points)

  • ✓ Determines your status (Silver → Platinum)
  • ✓ Calculated over a rolling 12-month period
  • ✓ Max 300 XP rolled over at the start of a new year
  • ✓ Earned on SkyTeam flights + Amex cards + SAF
  • ✗ Cannot be purchased or transferred
  • ✗ Cannot be redeemed for award tickets

Flying Blue Miles

  • ✓ Redeemable for award tickets
  • ✓ Earned on flights, cards, shopping, partners
  • ✓ Valid for 24 months (with activity)
  • ✓ Can be purchased and transferred
  • ✗ Do not affect your status
  • ✗ Common misconception: accumulating miles does NOT raise your status

Strategies to maximise your XP

1. Prioritise Business class on long-haul

A CDG-LAX flight in Business (LH3) earns 36 XP. In Economy that's 12 XP — 3× fewer. If your employer pays for Business, every flight is a massive status accelerator.

2. Travel via a hub with a connection

A flight AMS-NYC via CDG counts as 2 segments (AMS-CDG + CDG-JFK). That earns 5 + 10 = 15 XP in Economy, versus 10 XP direct. The connection adds 50% more XP.

3. Use a Flying Blue Amex card

The Amex Platinum Flying Blue card offers 60 XP/year (~€5/month), which is 60% of the XP needed for Silver. The Gold card gives 30 XP/year. These XP are credited automatically.

4. Watch for double XP promotions

Flying Blue periodically runs campaigns where certain routes earn 2× or 3× XP. These periods are ideal for a mileage run if you are close to a threshold.

5. Understand the XP rollover

A maximum of 300 XP can roll over to the start of your new qualification year. If you finish your year with 450 XP above Gold (after the 180 deducted), only 270 XP carry over — you start with 270 XP.
